With grandiose ingenuity, Cervantes tells of the adventures of the impoverished nobleman, who lives in a dream world of past knightly times, and his faithful armour-bearer Sancho Panza. Similar to Goethe's Faust for the Germans, Don Quixote has become a symbol of national genius for the Spanish. The narrator's sympathy for his characters and his lovingly ironic tone make Don Quixote a wonderful anti-hero of world literature.
