They see themselves caught in crystal ice where they find out only until the next morning with the help of the village. Stifter versifies the relatively simple story with few means to an intensive impression. The snow falling steadily and the children marching unwaveringly makes the reader feel a mysterious unity. The image of the snowfall is one of Stifter stylistic masterly-achievements.
