The Song of Songs (1,1-2,14) – Cantica Canticorum This page from the Gutenberg Bible depicts the most beautiful and best-known Song of Solomon, the Canticle of Canticles. The moving, gentle and extremely erotic lines which describe the courtship of the young enamoured king are unparalleled and so often quoted: “I am the rose of Sharon, The lily of the valleys”. The initial “O” of “Osculetur me ...” shows the two lovers sitting opposite one another. Tendrils spill out from the “O” to fill the edge of the page with blossoms: with aquilegias as the symbol of the Holy Trinity, love and sexual power and with acanthus leaves, the sign of immortality. In the midst of this sumptuous embellishment sits a nightingale, the symbol of love and desire.

This prologue is contained neither in the Latin Vulgate nor in modern-day Bibles. St Jerome probably took it from the Septuagint or the original Hebrew version. The Book of the Maccabees, also not found in today’s Bible, tells the story of the Jews’ wars for independence from the Seleucid Empire – in other words, a form of inner-Jewish civil war. The initial shows King Alexander the Great of Macedon with his shield.

The prologues to the Book of Job are no longer included in today’s Bibles. The beginning of the Book of Job presented here describes him as a man who never abandoned his true faith, regardless of the hardships he was forced to undergo. For this the Lord rewarded him with a long and rich life: “Vir erat in terra us...”
This page is rather modest in its illumination for the Berlin Gutenberg Bible as it is almost entirely devoid of the otherwise lavishly applied colour blue. The ornaments in the centre of the columns culminate in wonderfully ornate tendrils at the bottom of the text. A miniature shows the ill Job whose health is restored by the strength of his faith in God.
