Our Bible pages are reproduced in the tradition of Gutenberg. Pure linen papier bearing a watermark is created by hand with the greatest of care. The black text is printed on historical Gutenberg Museum machines. The rubrication, headings, ornaments and miniatures are drawn in and painted by hand with the utmost perfection by our book artists. True to the mediaeval art of book embellishment, first an initial drawing is made and then the gold leaf is applied. Only then do our artists begin to illuminate the prints in colour.
Applying the fine, raised gilt decoration is an ancient skill which very few artists still master. Here, a base material is applied to the paper layer by layer in an elaborate and time-consuming process to form a platform for the gold leaf.

We supply our ornamental Bible prints in either a grey or burgundy presentation folder (format: 51 x 39 cm) together with a brochure on the Gutenberg Bible. If you would like your print framed, you can choose between a removable frame (format: 57.5 x 44 cm) and a handmade, airtight and dustproof frame with a gilt wooden trim. Both frames protect the costly gold leaf as the glass is raised from the passe-partout and thus from the surface of the print.

just like in the 15th century. The paper for our deluxe pages is handmade with a watermark and is printed on historical machines owned by the Gutenberg Museum (Korrex Hannover). As at Gutenberg's workshop, only the text in black is printed, with everything else added by hand. The beginnings of sentences are accentuated in red with a quill or brush as upstrokes, with headings also written in by hand (rubrication). The initials and miniatures are sketched into the empty spaces left by Gutenberg for this purpose and in the margins. The base substance for the gold leaf is then applied and the gold laid on top of this. The pages are illuminated in many layers of ink with fine heightening and shading. Finally, the last line ornaments are added and the gold polished. Bible original format: ca. 45 x 33 cmStorageOur deluxe Bible prints are supplied in a handmade presentation folder (51 x 39 cm) that perfectly protects the gold leaf. An informative brochure in English and German on the Gutenberg Bible and its manufacture is also included. Two ornamental initials are embedded in the elegant proportions of Gutenberg's column of text. The illumination displays unusual mastery, with each one of the precise brush strokes visible down to the last detail. The indentation of the red heading, written by hand in the original Bible, is especially authentic. The scribe did not align his letters with the rest of the column, although there was enough room to do so. Gutenberg, however, working only with his lead composition, kept his columns uniform in this work of over 1,200 pages.Letter of Paul to the Romans. The Song of Songs (1,1-2,14) – Cantica Canticorum This page from the Gutenberg Bible depicts the most beautiful and best-known Song of Solomon, the Canticle of Canticles. The moving, gentle and extremely erotic lines which describe the courtship of the young enamoured king are unparalleled and so often quoted: “I am the rose of Sharon, The lily of the valleys”. The initial “O” of “Osculetur me ...” shows the two lovers sitting opposite one another. Tendrils spill out from the “O” to fill the edge of the page with blossoms: with aquilegias as the symbol of the Holy Trinity, love and sexual power and with acanthus leaves, the sign of immortality. In the midst of this sumptuous embellishment sits a nightingale, the symbol of love and desire.

Gutenberg Bible II,162, Prologue of St Jerome to the Book of the Maccabees 1:1–25 (Prologus Hiernonymi in libros Machabeorum)
This prologue is contained neither in the Latin Vulgate nor in modern-day Bibles. St Jerome probably took it from the Septuagint or the original Hebrew version. The Book of the Maccabees, also not found in today’s Bible, tells the story of the Jews’ wars for independence from the Seleucid Empire – in other words, a form of inner-Jewish civil war. The initial shows King Alexander the Great of Macedon with his shield.
