The scribe did not align his letters with the rest of the column, although there was enough room to do so. The moving, gentle and extremely erotic lines which describe the courtship of the young enamoured king are unparalleled and so often quoted: “I am the rose of Sharon, The lily of the valleys”. The initial “O” of “Osculetur me ...” shows the two lovers sitting opposite one another. Tendrils spill out from the “O” to fill the edge of the page with blossoms: with aquilegias as the symbol of the Holy Trinity, love and sexual power and with acanthus leaves, the sign of immortality. In the midst of this sumptuous embellishment sits a nightingale, the symbol of love and desire. Gutenberg-Bibel I/293, Psalms, Psalm 1–4: “Beatus vir qui non abiit in consilio impiorum” This page of the Gutenberg Bible contains psalms extolling a life devoted to God and peace – also very topical in today’s (militant) climate. We offer this page in two versions, this one with an ornamental initial. Both prints feature floral ornaments on the lower edge of the page with a bird, dragonfly and the peacock as a symbol of beauty and immortality. Format: ca. 44 x 32 cm (the size may vary slightly with handmade paper) Reproducing ornamental pages from the 42-line Bible Our Bible pages are reproduced in the tradition of Gutenberg. Pure linen papier bearing a watermark is created by hand with the greatest of care. The black text is printed on historical Gutenberg Museum machines. The rubrication, headings, ornaments and miniatures are drawn in and painted by hand with the utmost perfection by our book artists. True to the mediaeval art of book embellishment, first an initial drawing is made and then the gold leaf is applied. Only then do our artists begin to illuminate the prints in colour. The beginning of the Book of Job presented here describes him as a man who never abandoned his true faith, regardless of the hardships he was forced to undergo.
