In the 19th century Épinal in France became the centre of coloured picture sheet manufacture, where individual workshops dependent on patronage rapidly grew into semi-industrial, self-supporting printing enterprises. Modern printing methods were developed during this time and used to produce many of the exhibits depicted in this catalogue, ranging from chansons to games to military battle sheets.
