Gulliver's Travels is the most famous work of the Irish writer, Anglican priest and politician Jonathan Swift. A naive do-gooder, the ship's doctor Gulliver goes on a journey to return home as a disillusioned misanthrope at the end of his fantastic adventures. The mere shift in scale in Lilliput, the land of the dwarves, and Brobdingnag, the land of the giants, makes all human activity ridiculous. While in Lilliput he can pull an entire war fleet across the sea with one hand and his appetite threatens to cause a famine, he has to fear for his life among the giants themselves as a toy in the hand of an infant. The London lawyer Jonathan Harker travels to Transylvania at the request of Count Dracula, as he has previously purchased a house in London and now wants to have the purchase and the forthcoming passage clarified by his lawyer. On the outward journey Harker notices some strange things. A local resident gives Harker a rosary to protect him. The first few days pass quietly but Harker is asked not to enter some rooms and promises to stick to it. He notices that the count has no reflection in the mirror and gets a greedy expression at the sight of blood, when he cuts himself while shaving. Anyone who believes that there are no more unanswered questions about the person and work of Johannes Gutenberg, that everything has long been known and researched, is probably making a widespread mistake. Since 2018 at the latest, however, people in Mainz should know better: 50 years after the assumed year of death of the patron saint of the university, which was re-founded in 1946, the Department of History organised an interdisciplinary symposium on the "Man of the Millennium" together with the Institute for Historical Regional Studies. Together, they had set themselves the goal of clearing up persistent clichés, scrutinising weak or unsubstantiated statements, putting hypotheses to the test, examining the reliability of much-quoted documents, tracing the reception of the person and his work over the course of time and incorporating all the new sources and insights gained since the major anniversary in 2000.
