The Letter of Paul to the Romans. Enlarged detail
For connoisseurs of fine illumination: an enlarged detail from the Gutenberg BibleThis detail from the 42-line Gutenberg Bible shows the prologue and beginning of the Letter of Paul to the Romans. Two ornamental initials are embedded in the elegant proportions of Gutenberg's column of text. The illumination displays unusual mastery, with each one of the precise brush strokes visible down to the last detail. The indentation of the red heading, written by hand in the original Bible, is especially authentic. The scribe did not align his letters with the rest of the column, although there was enough room to do so. Gutenberg, however, working only with his lead composition, kept his columns uniform in this work of over 1,200 pages.Letter of Paul to the Romans. Hand proof printed from a brass plate on 100% rag paper, hand coloured, 22-carate gold leaf. Numbered with a certificate of authenticity (limited to 150 copies). Format: 33 x 28 cm. Also available in a hand-finished gold frame which is airtight and dustproof, with the print placed on top of the passe-partout (format: 52 x 47 cm). Reproducing ornamental pages from the 42-line Bible Our Bible pages are reproduced in the tradition of Gutenberg. Pure linen papier bearing a watermark is created by hand with the greatest of care. The black text is printed on historical Gutenberg Museum machines. The rubrication, headings, ornaments and miniatures are drawn in and painted by hand with the utmost perfection by our book artists. True to the mediaeval art of book embellishment, first an initial drawing is made and then the gold leaf is applied. Only then do our artists begin to illuminate the prints in colour.Applying the fine, raised gilt decoration is an ancient skill which very few artists still master. Here, a base material is applied to the paper layer by layer in an elaborate and time-consuming process to form a platform for the gold leaf. Information on storage and frames We supply our ornamental Bible prints in either a grey or burgundy presentation folder (format: 51 x 39 cm) together with a brochure on the Gutenberg Bible. If you would like your print framed, you can choose between a removable frame (format: 57.5 x 44 cm) and a handmade, airtight and dustproof frame with a gilt wooden trim. Both frames protect the costly gold leaf as the glass is raised from the passe-partout and thus from the surface of the print. Please note: allow an extra one to two weeks for delivery of a print in a permanent frame.

Cantica Canticorum. Ornamental page from the Berlin Gutenberg Bible
Aufbewahrung: Weinrote Präsentationsmappe
Gutenberg-Bibel II/15v: The Song of Songs (1,1-2,14) – Cantica Canticorum This page from the Gutenberg Bible depicts the most beautiful and best-known Song of Solomon, the Canticle of Canticles. The moving, gentle and extremely erotic lines which describe the courtship of the young enamoured king are unparalleled and so often quoted: “I am the rose of Sharon, The lily of the valleys”. The initial “O” of “Osculetur me ...” shows the two lovers sitting opposite one another. Tendrils spill out from the “O” to fill the edge of the page with blossoms: with aquilegias as the symbol of the Holy Trinity, love and sexual power and with acanthus leaves, the sign of immortality. In the midst of this sumptuous embellishment sits a nightingale, the symbol of love and desire. Gutenberg Bible II/131v: End of the Prologue of St Jerome, the Book of Daniel 1:1–18, “Anno tertio regni Ioachim...” This page of the Gutenberg Bible describes Daniel’s life at the court of King Nebuchadnezzar. It is an ode to a purist lifestyle without meat and alcohol, concentrating on virtues such as inner composure, diligence and abstinence. In the initial we see Daniel on the left, surrounded by lions, and the king on the right, listening to Daniel’s advice. Format: ca. 51 x 33 cm (the size may vary slightly with handmade paper) Reproducing ornamental pages from the 42-line BibleOur Bible pages are reproduced in the tradition of Gutenberg. Only then do our artists begin to illuminate the prints in colour. Applying the fine, raised gilt decoration is an ancient skill which very few artists still master.

The Book of Job. Ornamental page from the Berlin copy of the Gutenberg Bible
Aufbewahrung: Graue Präsentationsmappe
Gutenberg Bible I/280, End of first and second Prologue, The Book of Job (1:1–17): “Si autem fiscellam …" The Book of Job, end of the First Prologue, Second Prologue and Job 1:1–17 (Prologus secundus): “Si autem fiscellam …” The prologues to the Book of Job are no longer included in today’s Bibles. The beginning of the Book of Job presented here describes him as a man who never abandoned his true faith, regardless of the hardships he was forced to undergo. For this the Lord rewarded him with a long and rich life: “Vir erat in terra us...” This page is rather modest in its illumination for the Berlin Gutenberg Bible as it is almost entirely devoid of the otherwise lavishly applied colour blue. The ornaments in the centre of the columns culminate in wonderfully ornate tendrils at the bottom of the text. A miniature shows the ill Job whose health is restored by the strength of his faith in God. The Book of Wisdom. Ornamental page from the Berlin Gutenberg Bible
Aufbewahrung: Graue Präsentationsmappe
Gutenberg Bible II/17: The Book of Wisdom (Liber Sapientiae), “Diligite iustitiam qui iudicatis terram ...” This page of the Gutenberg Bible shows the end of the Song of Songs and the beginning of the Book of Wisdom, the apocryphal part of the Old Testament. It is contained in the Septuagint and Vulgate and considered by Orthodox and Catholic (but not Protestant) Christians to be part of the Bible. It was not written by Solomon but probably by an unknown Hellene. The first chapter recommends that man lead an upright life in faith. The ornamentation on the page supports this appeal with the acanthus leaf, the sign of immortality and rebirth, as the reward for a devout life.
